Feeling Guilty Down Under

Some times as a Belongings Coach, just a couple of emails suffice to put my clients on the right track.

Here is a recent email thread, reprinted with kind permission under a different name.

Hi Sarah

This is a random question, but in 2011, I went to Beatrice von Tresckow in London and ordered this outfit (images not reprinted) to wear at my wedding that never happened. I did elope later on in a far simpler dress as I felt I couldn’t wear this over-the-top outfit on a beach on X Island.

I’ve never worn it and it cost some thousands of dollarsWhat would you suggest I do with it as I want to get rid of it but hoped it might make some money. It might be worthless but 5 years later I’m keen to find it a new home.

Hi Anne

Rational solution:

Have a look at second hand clothing websites in Australia to sell online. Really worth a shot. Or even put it on eBay. There are some international sites that might do well for you, like this one:

Emotional solution:

So five years ago, you spent £1166 which is around AUD2270 on this outfit.

At the end of today, take a breath in, know that the money is gone, the intention at purchase was perfect, as it is on fabulous holidays, new hobbies and all the things we enjoy in life and, breath out, cut your losses. I give you permission to just let it go for a song to someone who will love it.

List it if you need to, pack it up now and in 12 months’ time give it to me if it is unsold and I will find it a good home and return any profits to you.

Kind regards

Thank you Sarah!!

Ha ha! That was wonderful! Permission is what I needed to get rid of it and yes the money means nothing now. I did need to hear from someone who sees this stuff all the time to know that I have been dreaming to think that someone would think it was a treasure and give me lots of money!  I’ll check out the online sites and go from there.

What you wrote was perfect! Like soothing therapy required for a mini hoarder of useless garments. Out it goes and so will all the negative feelings attached to the outfit.

Thank you so much,
